Stu Buchanan
Broadcaster & Curator
Born in Scotland and resident in Sydney, Stu Buchanan has spent the last two decades hunting for music that defies convention and definition; kick-starting record labels, radio programs, zines, gigs, podcasts, blogs and more. His work has been covered in articles by The Guardian, Time Out and The Brag, who dubbed him “one of Australia’s most important champions of innovative music”.
He has worked as a broadcaster for the last fourteen years, presenting programs on Double J (ABC), Sydney’s FBi Radio and FBi Click, and UK station Resonance FM, and has interviewed artists such as Bjork, Fever Ray and Can. His current program, Fat Planet, is broadcast nationally every Wednesday at 8pm on Double J.
His passion for innovative and experimental music has led to the development of curatorial projects such as the renowned New Weird Australia initiative and his current record label Provenance, to guest programming roles at events and festivals.
Buchanan also consults in audience development for clients in the Australian cultural sector such as Sydney Opera House, Museum of Contemporary Art, TEDxSydney, MONA, Sydney Festival, SBS, Art Gallery of NSW and many more. He founded the award-winning digital creative agency The Nest in 2010, and worked with Mixed Industry and NSW Government to devise and deliver the inaugural Creative Sydney program, which latterly became Vivid Ideas.
