Sydney Creativity and Design Festival 2018
24 — 31 May 2018
Carriageworks
A creativity and design festival of talks, exhibitions, installations, innovation labs, workshops and parties using creative tension as inspiration.
At the 2018 Semi Permanent Creativity and Design Festival, we explored 'creative tension as inspiration' - those moments of positive and negative friction that come before a breakthrough. That time when we as creative thinkers and doers stand on the precipice of change until we learn the things we need to learn, to step forward into the future and design that experience, solve that brief, arrive at that perfect layout or make that life-changing decision. It’s hard to appreciate those last few steps whilst you’re in them, but as soon as they pass it’s an exciting ride and we sometimes wish we could have appreciated those prior moments a little more - because from continued success we don't learn anything, but from challenge we discover who we really are and where we might want to evolve to.

Information
- We commission Australian and International artists to make monumental new work that intersects with contemporary ideas. Reflecting the diverse communities of urban Sydney, our artist-led program is ambitious, radical and always inclusive.Carriageworks was built between 1880 and 1889 as part of the Eveleigh Railway Workshops. By the 1900s several thousand people worked here, building and maintaining locomotive engines and carriages for the expanding rail network. Those workers shaped the development of our city for over 100 years. The Carriageworks site was one of the first places to employ Aboriginal people on an equal basis. It is also the place where generations of new migrants were first employed. In 1917, it was within these walls that the Great Strike started, which saw thousands of workers march on NSW Parliament and, through sheer power in numbers, shut it down.In 2007, the site was redeveloped as a cultural precinct. Today, Carriageworks is the most significant multi-arts centre in Australia.
